Umrah is the “minor pilgrimage”: unlike Hajj, it can be performed at any time of year. This guide presents its rites and preparation.
1 What is Umrah?
Umrah is a visit to Mecca with specific rites (Ihram, Tawaf, Sa’i, then shaving/trimming). Highly recommended, it is not obligatory, and can be done on its own or before Hajj.
2 Best times
Umrah can be done all year round. Ramadan is especially recommended for its reward, but also the busiest; off-holiday periods are calmer and often cheaper.
3 Ihram and intention
Before reaching the Miqat, the pilgrim purifies himself, dons the Ihram (two white cloths for men), makes the intention for Umrah and recites the Talbiyah until Mecca.
4 Tawaf and Sa’i
In Mecca, you perform seven circuits around the Kaaba (Tawaf), pray two units behind the Station of Ibrahim if possible, then perform the Sa’i: seven walks between Safa and Marwa.
5 Exiting Ihram
Umrah is completed by fully shaving (recommended for men) or trimming the hair; women cut a small lock. You then exit the state of Ihram.
